Pat Garrity retires from the Orlando Magic

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Saturday 13 September 2008 at 9:13 am

Pat Garrity has decided to hang up the sneakers and call it a career. Garrity played in 31 games (0 starts) for the Magic last season and he averaged 9.2 minutes, 2.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. Garrity played in nine seasons for the Magic and he did a decent job off of the bench for them. He played in 513 games (98 starts) for the Magic and he averaged 20.5 minutes, 7.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. The Magic probably won’t miss Garrity much as his role on the team was getting smaller every season.

Carlos Arroyo leaves the Orlando Magic

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Monday 4 August 2008 at 9:21 am

Backup point guard Carlos Arroyo has left the Orlando Magic to sign with a team in Israel. Arroyo played in 62 games (20 starts) last season for the Magic and he averaged 20.5 minutes, 6.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. The Magic will likely depend on Anthony Johnson to replace Arroyo and there could be a slight dropoff in production. Arroyo played three seasons for the Magic covering 161 games (27 starts) in which he averaged 19.7 minutes, 7.9 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Arroyo will make more money in Israel and he will likely get to show what he can do with big minutes overseas.

The Orlando Magic trade guard Keyon Dooling to the Nets

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Monday 21 July 2008 at 12:05 am

The Orlando Magic have traded guard Keyon Dooling to the Nets for cash considerations. Dooling played in 72 games (1 start) for the Magic last season and he averaged 18.5 minutes, 8.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. The Magic felt that Dooling was expendable due to the recent acquisitions of Mickael Pietrus and Anthony Johnson.

The Orlando Magic sign point guard Anthony Johnson

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Tuesday 15 July 2008 at 11:25 am

The Orlando Magic have signed backup point guard Anthony Johnson to a 2-year, $3.8 million dollar contract. The 33-year old Johnson will back up Jameer Nelson this season. He played in 69 games (52 starts) last season for the Hawks and Kings and he averaged 22.2 minutes, 5.6 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Johnson should be able to give the Magic 15-20 decent minutes per night off the bench. He has now played in 682 games (237 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 20.0 minutes, 5.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game. This was a nice signing for the Magic.

The Orlando Magic sign G/F Mickael Pietrus

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Wednesday 9 July 2008 at 7:46 am

The Magic have signed G/F Mickael Pietrus to a multi year contract. Pietrus is 25 years old and he is 6’6″, 215 pounds and he should be the starting shooting guard for the Magic this season. He is a decent offensive player but his strength is on defense which will be a welcome addition to the Magic. Pietrus played in 66 games (16 starts) with the Warriors last season and he averaged 26.9 minutes, 7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 1.0 steal per game. Pietrus has now played in 310 games (97 starts) in his NBA career and he have averaged 21.0 minutes, 8.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game. One area in Pietrus’ game needs to improve and it’s shooting free throws as he has only hit 66.2% of his shots from the line. Still, this was a good move for the Magic as they have made their starting lineup even stronger than it was last season.

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 21 November 2007 at 5:37 pm

The Magic have traded Trevor Ariza to the Lakers for Maurice Evans and Brian Cook. Evans has played 7 games this season (0 starts) and he has averaged 13.7 minutes, 4.4 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. Evans has now played in 238 games (22 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 17.8 minutes, 6.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. Cook is a solid long range shooter off of the bench for the Magic. He has played in 6 games (2 starts) this season and he has averaged 11.7 minutes, 2.3 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. He has now played in 259 games (74 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 16.0 minutes, 6.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game. The Magic also had to release Bo Outlaw to make room on the roster for the two players they acquired from the Lakers. Outlaw’s NBA career could be over at his advanced age. Outlaw has now played in 914 games (352 starts) and he has averaged 5.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 blocked shots per game.

The Orlando Magic sign center Adonal Foyle

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 28 August 2007 at 3:01 pm

The Orlando Magic have signed reserve center Adonal Foyle.  Foyle plays a power game as he is a good shot blocker and rebounder who should give the Magic solid minutes behind Dwight Howard when he needs a blow.  He played in 48 games (6 starts) last season for the Warriors and he averaged 9.9 minutes, 2.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.0 block per game.  He nailed 56.5% of his shots from the floor but most of them were on putbacks and dunks.  He was a woeful 44% shooter from the free throw line.  Foyle played 10 seasons for the Warriors covering 641 games (269 starts) and he averaged 19.1 minutes, 4.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 1.7 blocks per game.  He made 47.7% of his shots from the floor and 50.1% of his free throws in his NBA career so far.

The Magic lose Travis Diener to the Pacers

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page by alleyoop on Monday 23 July 2007 at 12:06 pm

The Indiana Pacers have signed Travis Diener to a three year contract.  He played two seasons for the Magic that covered 49 games (0 starts) and he averaged 10.9 minutes, 3.8 points, 0.8 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game.  The Magic won’t likely miss Diener too much as he rarely got the opportunity to play.

The Orlando Magic to sign Rashard Lewis to a max contract on July 11th

Blogged under Big Magic News,Bloglockers,Comings & Goings,Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 3 July 2007 at 2:40 pm

July 11th is the first day a free agent can sign with a new team in the NBA and on that day Rashard Lewis will sign a long term max deal to play for the Orlando Magic.  Lewis had a injury marred season last year like a lot of key Sonics did.  He played in 60 games and he averaged 39.1 minutes, 22.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game.  Lewis also shot well last season as he hit 46.1% of his shots from the floor, 39% from three point range and 84.1% from the free throw line.  Lewis ends his career with the Sonics having played in 617 games (528 starts) and he averaged 33.9 minutes, 16.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.2 steals per game.  He shot 46.1% from the floor, 38.6% from three point range and 80.1% from the free throw line in his career as a Sonic.  Lewis did a great job in his time in Seattle as their #2 man behind Ray Allen.  Lewis’ signing will make the Orlando Magic a legit threat to win the Eastern Conference.
