Matt Barnes opts out of his contract with the Orlando Magic

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Big Magic News, Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 29 June 2010 at 8:34 pm

30-year old small forward Matt Barnes has opted out of his contract thus becoming a unrestricted free agent. Barnes played in 80 games (58 starts) for the Magic last season and he averaged 25.9 minutes, 8.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. The Magic would probably like to re-sign Barnes but there are a lot of small forwards on the free agent market so they won’t overpay to bring him back.

The Orlando Magic select Stanley Robinson in the 2nd round

Blogged under General, The Draft Report, Bloglockers, Big Magic News, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 25 June 2010 at 2:44 pm

The Orlando Magic have selected forward Stanley Robinson with the 59th overall pick of the NBA Draft. Robinson played in 34 games (all starts) for Connecticut and he averaged 14.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.2 blocked shots per game. He played in 126 games (103 starts) in his college career and he averaged 9.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 blocked shot per game. You can never have too many big men so I like this pick for the Magic.

The Orlando Magic select Daniel Orton in the first round

Blogged under General, The Draft Report, Bloglockers, Big Magic News, Front Page by alleyoop on Friday 25 June 2010 at 12:18 am

The Magic have selected 19-year old center Daniel Orton with the 29th overall pick of the NBA Draft. Orton is 6′10″, 255 pounds and still growing. He played in 38 games (0 starts) at Kentucky last season and he averaged 3.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.4 blocked shots per game. Orton has a nice upside and the Magic will be able to bring him along slowly as he learns from Dwight Howard.

The Orlando Magic head into tomorrow’s NBA Draft in good shape

Blogged under General, The Draft Report, Bloglockers, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 23 June 2010 at 1:48 pm

The Magic will have most of last year’s team back in 2010-11. With that in mind the Magic will likely take the best player available when they pick 29th and 59th in tomorrow’s NBA Draft. I think shooting guard or small forward would be the place to go in the first round as Matt Barnes has opted out of his contract and he has become a free agent. I also don’t think the Magic are happy with Vince Carter’s performance in his first year with the team. Regardless the Magic is in good shape heading into tomorrow night’s NBA Draft.

Jameer Nelson is starting to move up in the record books of the Orlando Magic

Blogged under General, Bloglockers, Steppin Up, Front Page by alleyoop on Wednesday 9 June 2010 at 3:51 pm

28-year old point guard Jameer Nelson played solid basketball last season. He played in 65 games (64 starts) in which he averaged 28.6 minutes, 12.6 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. Nelson has now played in 394 games (299 starts) in his NBA career in which he is averaging 27.6 minutes, 12.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.0 steal per game. Nelson is now 8th all-time in games played (394) with the Orlando Magic. He is also #8 in three pointers made (411), #5 in assists (1,831), #9 in steals (383) and #10 in points scored (4,869) in Magic history. The Magic need Nelson to stay healthy in the future and keep up the good work.
